4 <br /> Composting <br /> Composting is an earth-friendly activity as long as some common sense rules outlined below are <br /> followed. If you choose to compost, the following BMPs should be utilized. <br /> Suggested BMPs <br /> • Compost piles must be located on an unpaved area where runoff can soak into the ground or <br /> be filtered by grass and other vegetation. Compost piles should be located in an area of your <br /> yard not prone to water ponding during storms, and should be kept well away from wetlands, <br /> streams,lakes,and other drainage paths. <br /> • Compost piles must be maintained and turned over regularly to work properly. Large piles of <br /> unattended compost may create odor and vermin problems. <br /> • Avoid putting hazardous,inorganic,plastics or metal waste in the pile. <br /> • Cover the compost pile(See Figure)for two reasons: <br /> 1. To keep stormwater from washing nutrients into waterways. <br /> 2.
