) IO1fl
Shelley Towels 1 5Q
srbpe Dust
CITY OF EVERETF
` . Planning Dept.
To:City of Everett,
Planning Dept.
Re:Hills Residence,
1532 51's Pl.S.W.
Everett,Wa.98203
I was asked to evaluate some trees for hazard.I visited the site on 8/29/17.Following,are my
observations and recommendations.
Observations:This is a single-family home on a large suburban lot.At the N.E.corner of the lot is a
raised area at the top of a 3'retaining wall.Within this raised area are 2 trees of concern they are:
Tree#1,Pseudostuga menzlesii,Douglas Fir,31"DBH.This tree overhangs the house,landscape and
fence. It is 10'from the retaining wall. The soil is sandy and loose. It is undermined by animals in
numerous areas within the dripline. This tree is above the surrounding canopy and open to the storm
track from the S.W.
Tree#2,Acer macrophyllum,Bigleaf Maple,52"DBH.This tree was previously coppiced at 18"and has
re-generated 7 trunks. There as included bark at the union. There is decay beneath the bark, indicated
by bulges and seams. There are decaying stubs descending through the branch collars. There are other
pruning cuts made at 15'-20'. I suspect decay descends in columns from those topping cuts.
Both of these trees threaten the Hills'home, landscaping and fences. The species profile of both of
these trees make them highly likely to lose large limbs. The sandy soil profile and root disturbance at the
retaining wall make the root zones less stable.Their position of dominance and exposure within the
canopy excacerbate their structural flaws and increase the likelihood of failure.
Recommendations:I recommend that both these trees be removed.I am available for consultation on
these trees by any interested party.
Replanting:I recommend re-planting with A.Circinatum,Vine Maple at the size and quantity required by
the city. I am available for consultation on these trees by any interested party.
Sincerely,
Shelley Towers l/ ' I
