I plan to post this on the building tomorrow. This stairway is required for occupancy so must be replaced ASAP. A police officer was injured on the escape following unwanted guests down it. We have talked before that the stairway cannot be locked. The gate must open in the direction of travel with one motion. It can latch and not be accessible from the outside. Also under the existing fire code the fire escape stairs must be non-combustible. All work must be done under permit which can be obtained through the Building Department. If there is no progress on this item within the next 5 business days we will move forward with formally ordering the building vacated until the condition is fixed.
