!
 L P P E N D I X
 FIELD EXPLORATIONS AND LABORATORY TESTING
t FIF.LD EXPLORATIONS
IThe subsurface condi[ions a the project site vere explored by d:illing
4 borings and excavating 25 cest pits at the locations chown on Plate 1. In
addition, hand probing was performed at several location:z across the site to
better define the limits of localized bog areas.
IThe 4 borings were drilled on Sep[ember 19 and October 12, 1983 to dep[hs
ranging from 21 to 29 feet below er.isttg grade. The 6orings crere auvanced
Iusing a truck-moun[ed, con[inuous-flight, hollow-stem auger drill. Represen-
tative samples were obtained of each soil type encountered usLng a 3-inch-
I outside-diame[er split-barrel sampler. The sampler was driven into the soil
a distance of 18 inches using a 325-pound hammer free-[alling 30 inches. The
I number of blows required [o drive the sampler the last t2 inches is recorded
on the boring logs.
The 25 test pits were excavated on September l4 and 15, 1983 using a
1 rubber-tired backhoe. Represent.i[ive bag samples were ob[ained of e;ch soil
[ype encoun[ered.
i The borings and test p'_[s crere con[inuously ].ogged by a getitechnical
englneer from our firm. Soils .ere classifLed in accordance with the Unified
Soil Classification Sys[em des:ribed on I'la[e A-1.
The loga of the borings are presented on Plates A-2 thraugh A-5. The
logs of the test pits are presented on Plates A-6 through A-21. Ground ;ur-
face elevations at the exploration locations were established by interpolalion
froc a topographic survey prepared by Bush, Roed 6 Hi[chings, Inc. , dated
\ovember 1983. ihe explora[ion logs are based on our in[erpre[ation of [he
field and laboratory ata and indicate the various types of soils encountered.
They also indica[e the depths at which these soils or their characteris[ics
change, although the change ciay actually be gradual. If [he change occurred
between samples, it mas interpre[ed.
Observatiuns of ground •.ater conditions were made as the explorations
were performed. In additioo, piezometers were ins[alled in Borings 1 through
3 to monitor ground va[er levels following drilling. These piezome[ers con-
sisted of one-tulf-inch-diar.,zcer PVC pipe placed in the bo[ings and extending
I
A - I
, CseoEngineer
Incorpowted
