Park Dr. Nickerson Engineering
Everett, WA 98203 2221 Everett Avenue, #202
Everett, WA 98201
Attn: Marty Steingrebe
NE Project: 19-096
RE: Damaged Header Review
We visited the residence at the above address to review an existing window header that was apparently
damaged during the installation of a new window. Below is a summary of our observations and the
conclusion of our analysis.
The existing header is a 4x12 over the 10ft window in the dining area. It supports the roof framing over
the dining room and kitchen. The header was damaged in two locations. Near midspan, the bottom of
the header was roughly trimmed reducing the effective depth by approximately 1" (max). The end of the
header(end located towards the living room)was taper cut at the bottom. The taper starts at
approximately 32" from the support, to a 1.75" depth reduction at the support, severely compromising the
bearing capacity of the header.
We performed a structural analysis and have determined the damaged header no longer meets the
building code requirements for strength due to the reduction in the depth near midspan.
Therefore, the existing header is to be replaced with a new 4x12 DF#1 or better.
We trust this addresses your concerns. Please feel free to contact us via phone if further clarification is
required.
Sincerely,
Nickerson Engineering
A Li
•''< 'WASj7 10
' f ti
VP
.
iOPar4s.,
//3
Nickerson Engineering •2221 Everett Avenue, #202 Everett, WA 98201 • (425) 610-4425
