We are also attemptmg to create a buiding that is sympathetic lo lhe surroundig area We have
designed several muili-slory hotels in downtown core areas This experience has allowed us to lest out several
design strategies for ciadding systems. Because hotels must meet tranchise requirements for room sze and
layoul, often we have a facade lhat is a single wall plane punctuated by wmdows lhat are uni(orm in size and
location
To overcome the monotonous of this rypicai layout, we propose lo create relief in lhe facade using ihree design
elements. Cladding materials, color and relief.
1. Claddmg malerials chosen are brick and stucco. We have selected these two claddig systems because lhey
can be installed with bolh coior vanation and texWre variation Both claddings are o( similar materials.
a The bnck system vre have chosen is what is reterred to as'Ihin brick'. The brick is constructed irom
clay materials, the same as fuil size brick. The difference is that only the outer most face of lhe brick
s used, usually aboul il2" thick The result is a cladding that has lhe look and feel o( masonry
construclion, at a reduced cost
b. The slucco system we have chosen is compahble vith masonry, and lhe Mo complement themselves
nicely Both daddings have been used together hisrorically. We have chosen a color palette of earth
tones thal allows bolh cladding matcrials to fit togclher. The slucco system we are proposing is a hybrid
system comprised of cement board covered with synlhetic parging similar lo a lraditional stucco syslem.
One probiem with tradihonal stuccolcement is cracking and maintenanca. The system we are proposing
eiimmates lhis problem by loweling on an elastomeric coating. The coatir,y is made from synthetic
malerials, and while the appearance is sWcco, the performance of lhe coating is more durable and less
prone to cracking than traditional cement based stucco. Besides lhe advantage of having an inte9ral
color which eliminated painting, it also allows us to create relief in ihe facade We can'build ouC areas on
lop o( lhe cement board and cement coatings by using lhin foam elements. Decause the weather
protective membrane is provided by the cement hoard and cemenl coating, addmg (oam elements poses
minimal waler inirusion problems. The elastomeric coating is compatible wilh both foam and cemenl, so
we achieve bo!h a crack free stucco look and a durable low maintenance cladding.
COMMERCI AL HOSPITALITY RESIDENTIAL INTERIORS
2Aa3 Bnghlan Wpy SE.
