t APPENDIX A FIELD EXPLORATIONS AND LABORATORY TESTiNG FIEID EXPLORATIONS � The subsurface conditions at the pruposed Costco Wholesale site wae explored by ezcavating 12 test pits wit6 a CASE Sc� backhoe on June 10 and 11, 1993 to depths ranging from 5 to 12 fea below existing grade. The approximate lucations of the test pits are shown on Figure 2. 'Ibe exploration locatior,a were measured by taping and pacing from esiating landmarks and site featvres. Hlevations shown on the exploration logs were inte�pola�.ad from Wpoyrap6ic information shown on a drawing by Barghausen Consulting Engineers Inc. dued May 11, 1993 and enaded "Conceptual Grading aod Swrm Drainage Plan." 'Ihe explorations were continuously monieored by a geotechnic.al engincer from our firm who examined and classified the soils encountued,obtained represeatadve bult soil aamp�es,and observed ground water conditions. Soils were classified in general accordance with the ciusification system described on Figure A-1. TLe logs of the test pits aze presented on Figures A-2 through A-7. The logs are based on our interpretuion of the field snd laboratory data and indicate the various types of soils encountered. They also indicate the depths u w6ich ' these soils or their chazacteristics change, although the change might actually be gradual. i LABORATORY TESTING All soil sarnples were brought to our laboratory for further eacamination. Selected samples were tested to determine their moiseure content chazaaerutics.
