APPENDIX A
FIELD EXPLORATION
E-6225
Our field exploration was performed on July 1, 1993. Subsurface conditions at the sfte
were explored by drilling one boring to a maximum depth of thirty-nine (39) feet below
,.. the existing site grades. The borings were drilled using Mobile B-61 Mobile drili rig.
Continuous-flight, hollow-stem augers were used to advance and support the boreholes
during sampling.
The approximate boring location was determined by taping from the northwest property
corner. The boring elevation was deterrriined using a level and rod relative to an assumed
—' elevation of 0.00 feet at the level of the adjar, ent existing side walk. The location and
elevation of the boring should be considered accurate only to the degree implied by the
method used. These approximate locations are shown on the Boring Location Plan,
-' PISte 2.
The field exploration was continuously moitored by a engineer from our firm who
- classified the soils encuntered, maintained a log of the boring, obtained representative
,. samples, measured groundwater levels, and observed pertinent site features. All samples
were visually classified in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System which
' is presented on Piate A1, Legend.
In the boring, Standard Penetration Tests (SPT') were performed at selected intervals in
general accordance with ASTWI Test Designation D-1586. The split spoon samples were
driven with a one hundred forry (140) pound hammer freely falling thirry (30) inches. The
number of blows required to drive the last twe6ve (12) inches of penetration are called the
"N-value". This value helps to characterize the site soils and is used in our engineering
analyses. Shear strengths af undisturbed soils were measured wherP Fractical in the field
with a penetrometer. These results are recorded on the boring log at the appropriate
Isample depths. Representative soil samples were placed in closed containers and returned
' to our laboratory for further examination and testing.
IA logs of the boring is presented on Piate A2. The final log represent our interpretations
- of the field iog and the resuits of the laboratory exmination and tests of field samples.
I The stratification lines on the log represent the approximate Ioundaries between soii
types. In actuality, the transitions may be more graduai.
I
I
IEarlh Consultants, Inc.
