The City of Everett has asked that we prepare a letter of
opinion from a geotechnical standpoint on this issue.
Based on the topographic survey provided, none of the trees on the western half of the lot are in steep slope
areas and the trees on the eastern part of the site appear to be being removed to make way for the proposed
site improvements. Only three of the tree removals not associated with the house improvements are in areas
on sloping portions of the site. For the three trees in question (circled in the attached plan), we recommend
that the subject trees be coppiced. Based on our experience with the site and our experience with similar local
projects, it appears that coppicing the trees in question can be accomplished without sacrificing overall slope
stability. The stump and root systems should be left in place to supply soil stabilization in the area of the rootball,
and a revegetation plan should be developed to replace the rain interception supplied by the removed trees.
None of the remaining proposed tree removals is a cause for geotechnical concern as all of the trees except
the three along the southern property line near the center of the lot are on relatively flat portions of the site or
will be replaced with retaining walls or house structure.
The recommendations presented in this report are intended to allow removal of the subject trees without an
overall reduction in the stability of the slopes. We believe this can be accomplished if the recommendations
provided in this report and the arborist's recommendations are followed. No grading should occur on, or near,
the top of the slope. Extraneous disturbance of the vegetation on the slope outside the construction area should
be limited as much as possible. Significant landscaping or clearing of the slope should only occur in conjunction
with a sequenced landscape plan. Water from downspouts, surface drains and footing drains should not be
discharged onto the site slopes.
We trust that this report meets your immediate needs for the proposed development. Please contact us if we
can be of further service.
Respectfully submitted,
00—roivs7, GEOTECH CONSULTANTS, INC.
G., bF WAg •
4*„440• 1'l
,,~'- ec609 9 ti: James H.
