•
6
The hydroplanes are powered by outboard motors which range in size from 15
HP to a maximum of 60 HP. Only the adult categories are permitted to have
modified motors which produce higher noise levels.
Racing starts at Noon and is finished by 6 PM. The club begins setting up early
on the morning of the race and uses all of the beachfront at TAS. The
beachfront is used for the'pits'area which is markedand flagged off. Only
members of the club or public who have signed a waiver are allowed in the pits.
The public has the opportunity to get up close and personal with the racers and
boats by signing a waiver to enter the pits, where they can talk with the racers
and check out the boats.
Swimming and water play is not permitted at TAS until after the races have
concluded for the day. TAS Park is open to the public for general use, with the
exception of the beachfront pit area. Hauge Homestead Park on the East side of
the lake is not restricted for swimming or water play during the event, as it is
outside the boundaries of the race course.
SOA enlists a group of Explorers, Scouts or a High School club to assist with
traffic flow in the parking lot at TAS. Volunteers are required to wear high
visibility vests for safety. Having these volunteers also assist with deterring
• vehicle prowls during the event.
The Silver Lake Kiwanis provides a concession trailer which serves as both a
service to the public and a fund raiser. They are responsible for obtaining all
Health District permits and regulations with regards to food concession service.
A park ranger is assigned to the park from Noon to 6 PM. The ranger provides a
public relations function, answering questions from the public about swimming or
water play and can direct the public to Hauge Homestead or another location.
The ranger can also provide assistance with traffic issues, parking, contact the
police department if needed and such mundane tasks as replacing toilet paper in
the restrooms, re-setting tripped breakers and other public requests.
The last formal complaint occurred in 2008, which was a noise complaint from a
resident who called the parks department Monday following the race.
s(commonjrecreation/spedai eventjseattfe outboard races 2014
55
