City Council of Everett
30 April 2014
Thank you for your efforts to deal with the $15 million budget shortfall,
instead of just raising taxes. Please consider establishing a committee of
Everett taxpayers to help the City fashion a new budget.
Because government managers are paid in proportion to how many
employees they supervise, the government system of effectiveness is
upside-down compared to private business, where managers try to get
along with the least number of employees. Maybe the City of Everett
could give their managers bonuses based on their frugality in employee
hiring.
Furthermore, a merger of the fire and police departments has saved
money for cities throughout the country.
Finally, Everett can never get back the $80 million the City lost on the
Riverside development, but it can sell some of its existing property like
a small part of your park south of Emory's on Silver Lake, and the old
Scott Paper chip mill property.
Considering the Everett school bond vote, I think your voters expect
some serious cuts to your budget. This may be a time when Everett can
become a leaner organization, and yet be a better service for your
voters.
Howie Bargreen
