7
April 9,2014
To Whom It May Concern:
Thank you so much for considering our request to hold the fifth annual Brett Jensen
Memorial Fun Run/Walk on August 23,2014 with the assembly area being at Legion Memorial
Park, 145 Alverson Blvd.in North Everett. Below,we have provided you with more details about
our request for this event.
Background: Our son,Brett, attended Cascade High School where he graduated in 2001. He was
a wonderful, talented, kind, fun loving and caring young adult. Among his many accomplishments,
he was Associated Student Body President, had a 4.0 grade point average, played football and track,
was a Washington Scholar,a graduation speaker, elected as Governor of Boy's State and was
selected to Cascade High School's Hall of Fame. In the fall of 2001 he entered the University of
Washington. Tragically,on May 7,2002 he fell to his death off the third story deck of his
fraternity. As you can imagine this event has devastated our family and changed our lives forever.
Shortly after his death,we established the Brett Akio Jensen Memorial Scholarship Fund. In nine
years we have given out over$95,000 to local high school students in the Everett area. Each year
we give one scholarship to a deserving Cascade High School student and one in partnership with
the Everett Rotary Club.
Purpose of the Event: The purpose for doing the fun run/walk is really four-fold: 1.First and
foremost to remember Brett. 2. To stress the importance of health and fitness. 3. To raise some
money so that we can continue giving scholarships through Brett's Memorial Fund. 4. To have
fun. Seven years ago we held a golf tournament at Legion Memorial Golf Course. Even though
this endeavor was successful, it also limited who could participate. An event like this that we held
the last three summers involved many more people including entire families.
Route: The route we have chosen is clearly marked on the enclosed map. We would start and
finish at Legion Memorial Park. The approximately 3.6 mile route would go from Legion, head
west on Alverson and continue south on Grand to 196 street. At 19th street, the runners and walkers
would turn around and run north on Grand back to Legion Memorial Park. The participants would
run/walk on the sidewalks, bike paths and shoulders of the road so as not to block traffic. We feel
that this route would have minimal effect on traffic as a whole and would require little supervision.
Like the last three years no streets would have to be closed for this event. We would have a traffic
controller where the run begins and also at 19'h and Grand.
Preparation: We are willing to do whatever is required or needed to prepare for this event. For
the other runs/walks we left flyers on those houses affected by the route which explained in detail
about the event. We will do that again for this year.We would also be willing to attend a
neighborhood meeting to answer any questions or concerns.
An individual you may wish to contact is Mark Sadler who works in the Utilities Department for
the City of Everett.Mark would be willing to answer any additional questions that you may have
regarding Traffic Control for this event. Mark's phone number at work is 425-257-8967.
This fundraiser means a great deal not only to our family but to the hundreds of friends Brett had
during his short 19 years. Thank you again for your time and consideration. If you have any
questions please do not hesitate to call us at either 425-338-1877 or 425-330-8430.
Sincerely,Don,Jan,and Megan Jensen
The Brett Jensen Memorial Walk/Run Committee
48
