NELSON AND ASSOCIAT[5, INC.
Cunsulling liry;inccring(rnlugy
September 28, 1984
Project No. 7884
Page six
Alternate foundation support within this area could consist oS I
drilled piers which penetrate the dense glacial soils . We
would expect penetr, ation of approximately 12' to 17' below
existing grade to ahieve pier loads of 12 to 1$ tons per pier. I
Due to the existance of ground water within this area, poured
in place piers may :not be acceptable unless performed in the I
normally drier periods of the yearo Auger cast-in-place piles
ma,y 'oe necessary to maintain an adequate pile diameter. The
minimum pier/pile diameter recommended is 12 .inches. Interior
slabs-on-grade would be required to be either piled with the
structure or allowed to '£loat' independantly of the pier/pile
supported structure . Long term settlement of fl•oa¢ing slab
areas is expected.
Adequate drainaga should be performed around the structure areas.
We suggest the use of foundation and roof drain systems, indepen-
dantly directed into the main storm dx•ain system. We suggest .
the foundation drain scheme shown on the enclosed Subdrain and
Backfill Scheme be utilized for all structures plaoed on shallow
foundations with interior slabs-on-rade .
Pavement Sections
Site area development for the parking and access driveway areas
should anticipate adequate pavement sections due to the fine I
grained nature of the on-site soils.
I
During the noicnally drier periods of the year, we suggest that '
the pavement areas be cleared of all suricial organic material
and proofrollecl to determine if any soft spots occur. These
should be removed a.nd replaced with suitable granular struc+.ural
fill. Subsequent t;o proofrolling, a minimum 6" thick ubbase
of granular structural fill should be placed and compacted. F
minimum 4" 1;hick base of crushed rock should then be placed priar
to placement of a minimum 2" thick asphaltic concrete surfacing.
. ' I.
i '
I
I
