EVERETT
WASHINGTON
City of Everett Human Needs Grant
January 1,2020 through December 31,2020
Exhibit A
Program Summary
Organization &Program: Campfire: Mega Clubs
Objectives include developing healthy lifestyles, creating an open mindset, and learning to trust. To do this, youth must first
learn to value themselves and view themselves as successful in positive areas of their lives such as at home and in school.
Poverty and the circumstances of homelessness have a negative impact on children who may also have suffered from
Adverse Childhood Experiences and have developed low self esteem. Each activity has an embedded objective directed to
helping youth value themselves, get beyond their circumstances, and learn to make a contribution to themselves, their
families,and their communities.
Camp Fire Snohomish County's Mega Club is an afterschool and summer program at three Everett sites. Two are designated
as low income housing centers and one as the Domestic Violence Center. The priority is VIOLENCE/DELINQUENCY
PREVENTION with the objective being to prevent violence, crime and unhealthy behaviors in children and youth and help
them develop long term good choices for healthy lifestyles.
Self-Reliance courses are integrated into the curriculum and will empower youth to build skills that will help them become
self-sufficient,strengthening and enhancingthe quality of life of their whole family. The basic curriculum we use in these
programs is"Step It Up 2 Thrive,"an outgrowth from the Search Institute's Developmental Asset model with the goal of
helping children progress from"Surviving" (10 or fewer developmentalassets)to"Thriving" (30 or more developmental
assets.)We will utilize this Thrive curriculum which is a four step process:
1)Identifying Sparks(Develop Passions&Skills that are Meaningful and Motivating,Dr. Peter Benson,Search Institute)
2)Adopting a Growth Mindset(Dr. Carol Dweck,Stanford University)
3)Reflecting on Thriving Indicators(Search Institute and Thrive Foundation)
4)Building Goal Management Skills(Tuft Institute)utilizing GPS (Goal Selection,Pursuit of Strategies,Shifting Gears in
the face of challenges.)
Children learn to develop a resiliency for facing challenges, adopt their own goals(more Rely to achieve),reflect on them as
they move forward and adjust as needed. They'll take into account their own skills, talents and interests while makingthe
choices of foods to eat, making commitments for health and safety, avoiding drugs, gangs, alcohol&tobacco, and staying in
school. With good mentoring and follow-through,they will find success in school and in life.
We've taken Mega Club youth out to Camp Killoqua. Most of them have never experienced nature or been in the outdoors
amongtrees. In his book Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv states,"As the nature deficit grows, another emerging
body of scientific evidence indicates that direct exposure to nature is essential for physical and emotional health. For
example, new studies suggest that exposure to nature may reduce the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
(ADHD), and that it can improve all children's cognitive abilities and resistance to negative stresses and depression."
We help build caring and confident youth in their communities.
7
