- EVERETT
WASHINGTON
City of Everett Human Needs Grant
January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020
Exhibit A
Program Summary
Organization&Program: Childstrive:Community Engagement
Agency Mission:
Our mission is to partner with families and the community to support young children's success in daily life. We know that
helping babies and toddlers early in life leads to greater outcomes and that young children learn best in their natural
environments from primary caregivers. We work with families in their homes and communities to incorporate learning
opportunities into daily routines that build on family strengths. Our vision is that all children will be ready to succeed in
school and life.
Community Engagment Program Objectives:
Provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues
Improve childcare classroom practices
Improve childcare and shelter staffs support for social emotional development in classrooms
Increase childcare and shelter staffs knowledge of early childhood development
Increase children's school readiness and success
Community Engagment Program Structure:
We provide consultation and training to staff at shelters(Evergreen Treatment Center)and at Tomorrow's Hope Childcare
Center and the Connect Casino Road drop-in childcare provided by Mukilteo Y to support their ability to meet the needs of
very young children. We consult with them about best practices for classrooms like using imaginitive play and how to
deepen that play by following the lead of the children, about early childhood development and how to support positive
growth through play, and about social-emotional development in particular and how to understand children's behavior in
order to help them establish strong relationships through which they learn and how to regulate their emotions. The focus of
this work is often children who are acting out or withdrawn and helping staff gain empathy and understanding from the
child's perspective so that they can help the child instead of punish the child. The components of the work include: weekly
observations in the classrooms, coaching staff in the moment in the classrooms, individual meetings with teachers and
assistants regarding general practices and specific children and skills, screening of children as needed, and trainings for all
staff as needed.
Community Engagment Population Served:
Our goal is to impact preschoolers being served by Evergreen Treatment Center,Tulalip Learning Academy, Tomorrow's
Hope Childcare, and Mukilteo Y's drop-in childcare at Connect Casino Road. We do this by supporting the staff that work
with these children at these programs. These children are often homeless or housed precariously, many are from minority
groups and are immigrants who are marginalized, especially if they are undocumented, and all are at risk of falling behind
developmentally and not being ready to learn in kindergarten.
Community Engagment Purpose:
We seek to end the cycle of homelessness and poverty by helping parents and childcare and shelter staff take advantage of the
preschool years of heightened brain development to ensure that children are developing typically and are ready to succeed in
school and in life. Parents who learn how to support their children's healthy development are closer to their children, know
more about how their children learn, and are more involved in their education once they reach public school. Staff who
understand early childhood development, especially social-emotional development, are better able to support healthy
development of those for whom they care. Children who enter kindergarten ready to learn are more successful and have a
higher probability of graduating and going on to post secondary education/training.
7
