Project Impacts
The stream channel and buffer will be enhanced through planting, placement of large rock to
provide channel structure, and replacement of rock lined banks with native vegetation. Treated
lumber used in retaining walls near the channel will be replaced with native stone. Within buffer
functions will be improved that include plant diversity, structure, shading, infiltration, and
filtration.
There will be a net gain of function to critical areas or buffers associated with the proposed
project.
PLANTING PLAN
The goal of the proposed planting is to successfully establish a population of ecologically
adapted native plant species within stream buffer to provide stream bank stabilization, shading,
plant structure, plant diversity, and reduce the dominance of nonnative plant species.
Calculations are based on an overall plant spacing of 8 ft. X 8 ft. Actual planting design will
feature irregular planting spacing (i.e. clustering of plants). Grass may be seeded between plants
to reduce erosion between the house and stream. Where Himalayan blackberry was removed,
plants may be spaced to allow room for mowing blackberry to favor the planted stock.
Bare root plants are allowed. Substitution of native plant species with similar microsites is
allowed. Planting will be done between October and April. Watering or fertilization will not be
required. Mulching is optional using bark or other natural material. If conditions allow, planting
may be allowed in May, June, or September;however, watering would be required during these
drier months.
STREAM BUFFER ENHANCEMENT PLANTING
5,660 SF
Common Name Species Size WIS Number
Western redcedar Thuja plicata 24" FAC
Pacific dogwood Cornus nuttallii 24" FACU 5
Paper birch Betula paperifera 24" FACU
Indian plum Symphoricarpus albus 1-gal FAC
Vine maple Acer circinatum 1-gal FAC
Red-osier dogwood Cornus stolonifera 1-gal FAC
Red elderberry Sambucus racemosa 1-gal FACU
Baldhip rose Rosa gymnocarpa 1-gal FAC
Oregon grape Mahonia aquifolium 1-gal FACU 90
Pacific ninebark Physocarpus capitatus 1-gal FAC
Kinnikinick Arctostaphylos uva-ursi 1-gal FACU
Sword fern Polystichum munitum 1-gal FACU
Lady fern Athyrium filix-femina 1-gal FAC
Total Plants: 95
8
