t
A
"The receiving room (i.e., Room 133) does not require a lid to provide shielding because the concentration of the
radiation exposure reduces due to several factors, one of which is distance. Furthermore, the lid will actually contain
the radiation, resulting in an undesirable build-up of radiation within the receiving room; dispersion is preferred and
does not result in any negative exposure provided that procedures are followed while the source is exposed. At a
certain distance from the source (as indicated in the attached sketch), the exposure is below natural background
radiation levels, and therefore no special activity procedures or access restrictions are necessary on the TAT lid or
building room. TAT operational procedures will address preventing exposure within the exposure cone when the source
is exposed, which will not occur when the general public is present. Such procedures include but are not limited to
performing maintenance or other activities that would place persons above a plane measured X-feet off of the finished
floor elevation of X feet. Note that the thickness of the walls and shield door are significantly greater than required to
provide safe containment of the radiation. For example, the actual required thickness of concrete to provide effective
containment is less than 12",versus the 24" provided. The thicker protection has been provided to reduce design time
and expedite construction. Documentation substantiating these statements has been previously provided to, reviewed,
and approved by the Snohomish County Department of Health; see the attached letter."
,Ii4-477.
