toe
CNovember 4,1992
New positions In 1993 will be held to the smallest increase in
years. Three new police officers are proposed to be hired from
tl the general fund along with two Transit workers and one
{ equipment mechanic from the enterprise funds. Na other
Pull-time openings are foreseen at this time.
• A key rector in E x tt's future is, of
e the
u
revitalization Of our downtown. Approximately two yearsago, I
brought community leaders together for the purpose of
establishing a commitment to renewing the viability of our
e
city's Al.hough this isnot a process that can be
completed overnight, I am excited to see definite evidence of
prngress. Examples of this progress are the completed design
anc construction of Colby Crest, a 66-unit low income
apartment/retail complex; Skbtdal Enterprises has c e forward
with the construction of a five-story office/residential
building,Which is in the final stages;the new City of f Everett
Community Theater will be completed and operational in 1993,
and there has been substantial investment on the part of small
businesses In downtown facilities. We are pleased to recognize
three major businesses will be located in Everett in the
immediate future, bringing not only new long-term employment
but capital construction as well. The Group Health Cooperative
/ will site its new 63,000 square-foot facility on Maple Street:
Eaglerecently Hardward proposed a 100,000 square-foot home impnt
center an Hewitt Avenue;'and Overall Laundry has ently
completed the construction of e w 108,000 square-footplant
on Hardesn Road. We welcome each of these new businesses to
e
Everett and extend our pledge of cooperation in their new
enterprises. It is anticipated that another major office
building will begin construction in downtown during the coming
year, and we will continue to pursue amore diverse economic
stability in Everett. As evidenced in the above mentioned
developments, it is clear that we oving in the right
direction. Everett's renaissance is well underway.
As my travels take me around the nation, 1 find that Everett is
c
ry fortunate in the high level of support we receive from our
citizens. Neighborhood organizations continue to be the
backbone of our operations, end have revolutionized the
processes
city
government. City staff from eery department
are working hand-in-hand with neighborhood representatives,
1 planning and carrying out projects to improve the quality of
Sipe in o unity.
Through our partnership with neighborhoods and other agencies,
e have been able to initiate innovative programs to benefit
•
our city's youth. We are working to identify potential
problems before they escalate end take appropriate action.
