October 31,2001 <br /> same time,I also recognise the need to increase our public safety personnel to <br /> respond to these bleats.Public safety remains my top priority.If our economy <br /> improves and sufficient additional revenues become available to the Ciry,l will <br /> recommend hiring additional police officers and firefighters. <br /> Conclusions. The past few weeks have been difficuk for all of us. <br /> Although the City budget and our citizens will be affected by the terrorism and <br /> economic conditions,I want to close on a few positive notes. <br /> Pride in our City remains high. The recent Monte Cristo Awards <br /> recognized homeowners and businesses who have dramatically improved <br /> their properties throughout the City. <br /> Providing for the future for our children and grandchildren remade an <br /> important goal.In luly,we act the ribbon to open the Phil Johnson balifields. <br /> In August,1 bad the opportunity to present the Mayor's Reading Award to <br /> hundreds of youngsters who had satisfied the Everett Public Library's reading <br /> goals. Phase I of the Wiggums Hollow Park improvements have been <br /> completed in one of our most diverse neighborhoods. Earlier this month we <br /> finished major renovations on six sower fields. On February 1.five state <br /> universities will begin offering college classes at Everett Station. <br /> I that.the City's talented and dedicated employees.I assure them no <br /> layoffs are proposed in the 2002 budget.Oa the other hand,I know then duties <br /> and responsibilities will continue to increase as the City grows and we are <br /> unable to add additional employe.. I intend to discuss Mese issues directly <br />• <br /> with our employs in the near future. <br /> Careful and prudent budgeting over the past eight years has left the City <br /> in a strong financial position <br /> much better than many other government <br /> agencies.I sincerely thank each member of the City Council for your support <br /> and your hard work.1 look forward to our continuing to work together as we <br /> face the many challenges which may lie ahead of us. <br /> Respectfully submitted, <br /> Edward D.Hansen,Mayor <br /> 482 <br />
