October 29,2003
our citizens and community in the event of a disaster. To this end,we
completed the first phase of our Emergency Operations Center at the
South Police Precinct. This is a vital component of our ability to maintain
critical service levels during catastrophic events.
• Everett's waterfront area is an important community asset and an integral
• component of our economic development plans. When Port Gardner Bay
was listed as
a potenttal site for the Sea-based X-band radar,we
n.sponded to citizen input and worked with the Department of Defense
and our U.S.Congressional Delegation to remove Everett from its site list,
thereby preserving the waterfront's ability to attract businesses that will
enhance our economic development efforts.
Another essential element in Everetrs future prosperity is positive
relationships with other regional entities. We continue to make sure our
community's interests are well represented through numerous area and
regional organizations. The Tulalip Tribes area valued neighbor to the
north. We spearheaded a landmark alliance with the Tribes that
establishes a new baseline for our future cooperative efforts.
This past year,we worked wth Snohomish County to bring closure to a
long outstanding disagreement regarding solid waste issues. The
settlement agreement provides our citizens a long-ten solution to meet
our solid waste needs as well as providing$2.25 million toward our
cleanup efforts and redevelopment of the rivedront.
We confine to work hard to search out funding opportunities, both at the
State and Federal levels.to help fund a number of ongoing and new
programs end projects. We find these atlo.to be exceedingly important
in order to continue our successes especially in times of limited funds.
Far example, just last week,we were notified that our efforts in
Washington D.C.during the last year resulted in searing an additional
$500,000 for our
relocation and$1 nmillion f Burlington
epums
purchase Railroad
of additional Everett Transit
buas.Another recent success was the award of a$150,000 grant from
the U.S.Department of Justice that will provide the opportunity to continue
our Community Prosecution efforts throughout the City, paying special
attention to the needs of north Everett.
