Minimize <br /> the use of water when cleaning produce to avoid excess runoff. <br /> 4. Cleanup materials, such as brooms and dustpans, must be kept near the storage area. <br /> 5. Gutters, storm drains, and catch basins on the property must be cleaned as needed. See BMP S.9 <br /> in Chapter 4 for details on catch basin cleaning requirements. <br /> The following BMPs or equivalent measures are required of all businesses that process fruits or <br /> vegetables: <br /> 1. Eliminate illicit connections to the stormwater drainage system. See BMP S.1 in Chapter 4 for <br /> details on detecting and eliminating these connections. <br /> 2. Employees must be educated on benefits of keeping a clean processing area. <br /> 3. Cleanup materials, such as brooms,dustpans,and shovels, must be kept near the storage area. <br /> 4. The processing area must be swept or shoveled daily to collect dirt and fruit and vegetable <br /> fragments for proper disposal. <br /> 5. The processing area must be enclosed in a building or shed, or covered with provisions for <br /> stormwater run-on prevention. See BMPs S.4, S.5, and S.7 in Chapter 4 for more on covering <br /> and run-on prevention,OR <br /> The processing area must be paved and sloped to a sanitary sewer drain, holding tank, or process <br /> treatment system collection drain, and stormwater run-on prevention must be provided for the <br /> processing area. Call the City's Industrial Pretreatment Program(425)257-8874 for information <br /> on discharging to the sanitary sewer. See BMPs S.6 and S.3 in Chapter 4 for details. <br /> Suggested BMPs <br /> The following BMPs are not required but can provide additional pollution protection: <br /> 1. Cover storage areas for fruits and vegetables. See BMPs S.4 and S.5 in Chapter 4 for more <br /> details on coverings. <br /> 2. A containment curb, dike, or berm can be used to prevent offsite runoff from storage or <br /> processing areas and also to prevent stormwater run-on. See BMP S.7 in Chapter 4 for more <br /> information. Note that run-on prevention is required for processing areas, but not for storage <br /> areas. <br /> 3. The storage area should be swept or shoveled daily to collect dirt and fruit and vegetable <br /> fragments for proper disposal. Keep hosing to a minimum. <br /> A4.4 Storage of Solid Wastes and Food Wastes <br /> Description of Pollutant Sources: This activity applies to businesses and public agencies that store solid <br /> wastes and food wastes outdoors. This includes ordinary garbage. If improperly stored,these wastes can <br /> contribute a variety of different pollutants to stormwater. Requirements for handling and storing solid <br /> waste may include a permit from the Snohomish Health District. For more information, call(425)339- <br /> 5200. <br /> NOTE: Dangerous solid wastes must be stored and handled under special guidelines. Businesses and <br /> agencies that store dangerous wastes must follow specific regulations outlined by Ecology and, in some <br /> cases,the Snohomish Health District. Ecology regulations are outlined in Appendix A.
