References to maximum dry unit weights are
• established in accordance with the latest version of ASTM Standard Test Method D1557
• (Modified Proctor). The earthwork operations should be observed and tested by a
• representative of Kleinfelder.
•
• 4.5.2 Site Preparation
•
• Pavement, planters, abandoned utilities, foundations, and other existing infrastructure within
proposed improvement areas should be removed and the excavation(s) backfilled with
• engineered fill. Debris produced by demolition operations, including wood, steel, piping, plastics,
• etc., should be separated and disposed of off-site. Existing utility pipelines or conduits that
• extend beyond the limits of the proposed construction and are to be abandoned in place should
• be plugged with non-shrinking cement grout to prevent migration of soil and/or water.
• Demolition, disposal and grading operations should be observed and tested by a representative
• of the geotechnical engineer. Areas to receive fill should be stripped of all dry, loose or soft
• earth materials and undocumented fill materials to the satisfaction of the geotechnical engineer.
•
• • Pavements, Sidewalks and Other Flatwork Areas in Developed Areas: After the area
• has been stripped of soft earth materials and debris, we recommend that the exposed
• subgrade be proof-rolled with heavy construction equipment (e.g. loader or smooth-drum
roller) to disclose areas of soft and yielding material. Where soft and yielding material is
4P observed, it should be overexcavated and replaced as structural fill. After proof-rolling
• and/or prior to placement of fill, the subgrade should be scarified to a depth of 6 to
• 8 inches, moisture conditioned, and compacted to at least 95 percent of the maximum
• dry unit weight. The proof-rolling should extend beyond the proposed improvements a
horizontal distance of at least 2 feet.
•
• • Pavements, Sidewalks and Other Flatwork Areas in Current Undeveloped Areas: After
• the area has been stripped of vegetation, soft earth materials, and debris, we
• recommend that the existing soils be overexcavated to a depth of at least 18 inches
•
• 20203884.001A/SEA20R110164 Page 18 of 28 June 1, 2020
©2020 Kleinfelder
•
•
