Est. WASHINGTON <br />1893 <br />PROCLAMATION <br />WHEREAS, each year on the third Monday of January Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is <br />observed and is an opportunity for us to reflect and act on the work that still needs to be done <br />for racial equality and civil rights across our nation. <br />AND, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. devoted his life to the advancement of civil rights and public <br />service. He believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all, and challenged all citizens to live <br />up to the purpose and potential of America; <br />AND, in 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed Martin Luther King Jr. day into law and <br />encouraged communities to transform it into a day of community service, grounded in King's <br />teachings to focus on bringing people together and breaking down the barriers that have divided <br />us as a nation; <br />AND, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s message of freedom, justice and equality continues to <br />resonate throughout Everett; <br />AND, each year, residents of Everett recognize our rich and vibrant population of diverse ethnic <br />backgrounds and their importance to our community by honoring the memory of Dr. Martin <br />Luther King Jr., and participating in civic events and activities that reflect his legacy; and <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, Cassie Franklin, Mayor of the City of Everett, do hereby proclaim <br />January 18, 2021, as <br />Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration Day <br />And encourage all people to honor the memory of Dr. King, and to put his teachings into action <br />with the commitment to the basic principles of freedom, justice and equality for all. <br />Signed this . d. of January 2021 <br />Mayor Cassie Franklin <br />
