CASPER, PHILLIPS Sc ASSOCIATES
45-01 Vertical Upgrade Phase 1 Executive Summary — 90% Submittal I
pg
The scope of the 45-01 vertical upgrade is to ensure the building structure meets current building code
requirements following the replacement of the eight stacker cranes, process mechanical and controls
equipment and the replacement of two engine insert hoists with two engine insert hoist cranes relocated
to the south end of the low bay rails. The 2015 International Building Code (IBC) controls alterations to
existing buildings by referencing the 2015 International Existing Building Code (IEBC). The IEBC has
three compliance methods for alterations. The Work Area Method best suits the project due to its
flexibility for checking compliance of existing buildings to current code. With this method, removal and
replacement of existing equipment with equipment that serves the same purpose is defined as a Level 1
Alteration. A Level 1 Alteration requires the building structural system to comply with IBC gravity load
requirement if the replacement of equipment results in additional dead load.
The new process equipment and engine insert hoist cranes will impose additional load on the building
structure; necessitating the need for gravity load analysis. Furthermore, numerous modifications to the
building structure over the years, including a walk-on ceiling, have resulted in significant dead load
addition beyond the original building design. The vertical upgrade includes the cumulative effect of these
modifications in addition to the effect of the current proposed modifications.
This 45-01 Vertical Upgrade Phase 1, 90% submittal includes details of the math model finalized for
member stress analysis results and includes the required strengthening details for overstressed
members. Phase 2 of the project will analyze the adequacy of all primary structural connections and will
document the design strengthening for connections where required.
