The
purpose of the review is to determine if a penetration can be installed in the roof slab fora new duct and fan.
The structure under review is a single -story structure with a basement and overall dimensions of 58' x 131'. The
structure is framed with T-beam roof and floor beams supporting mild reinforce concrete slabs. Walls are a mix of
concrete and masonry. Columns and footings are concrete.
A new 13" diameter penetration is desired in the roof slab near the south-east corner. The proposed penetration
would be located in the existing 4-1/2" concrete slab, centered between existing concrete beams. Along with the
proposed penetration, new ductwork and a 100-pound fan would be added to the roof.
Based on existing structural drawings by Maloney Herrington Freesz & Lund, dated November 21, 1977, the
existing roof was designed to be a future floor with an added 2-1/2" concrete topping and a 125 PSF live load.
Because of this, the roof beams were not check for the added 100-pound fan and added duct work as that
loading is significantly less than the designed future floor loading.
The existing 4-1/2" concrete slab was checked to determine the impact of the proposed 13" diameter penetration
with the added weight of the fan and ductwork included. See attached calculations. Based on our review the
existing concrete slab is adequate for the required loading with the penetration installed.
Sincerely,
DCI Engineers
Craig A.
