Yes Project No. Permit No.
At the client's request, ESNW Rep was on site to observe and test compaction of remedial excavation backfill.
Remedial Excavation Backfill
While on site Rep observed the contractor placed a row of steel sheets two feet off of the shoring wall as a temporary form for
the next lift of CDF backfill. Rep observed the contractor beginning to add a new 12" lift of cement treated native backfill into
the depression surrounding the raker supports. Rep observed the contractor compacting each lift with a hoe pack. The
contractor informed Rep that they used had already used two super -sacks of Portland cement powder to treat the backfill
used today. The contractor was unloading another truckload of cement powder sacks while rep was onsite. Rep took
compaction tests over the cement treated backfill but was unable to obtain compaction results over 82% of the maximum dry
density due to the high moisture content of the soil. Rep observed that the backfill was compacted solid and it did not yield or
pump beneath the weight of the excavator and bulldozer operating in the excavation today. Given this observation and
considering the application of cement amendment to the backfill exceeded our expectations and recommendations the backfill
is considered to have been adequately amended and
compacted. The contractor was uncertain if the next lift of
CDF would be poured today due to the snowy weather. Rep
will return to observe and test compaction of the cement ,if t -ems
treated remediation backfill. Rep observed the remedial
excavation was stable in its current configuration and l i
condition. It is recommended that Rep be notified
immediately if any changes in the slope conditions are
observed. It is the responsibility of the contractor to perform
all necessary safety measures in accordance with state and
federal regulations. ESNW rep will return daily to observe
the condition of the temporarily over -steepened shoring
_ Y
excavation. ! ,. .,' r
ESNW Rep will return when requested.
Emmett Hartley, G.I.T.
ESNW Field Tech
(206) 376-4906
