GeoDesign noted that the trench area was at least 8 feet wide and
was dug to 15.75 to 15 feet below ground surface, for two sections at approximately 25 and 20 feet in length.
Material encountered within the trench consisted of gray to brown silty SAND with gravel from 0 to approximately 12.5 feet
below ground surface. Material encountered below the silty SAND consisted generally of brown silty SAND with gravel
(50%) mixed with debris(Red bricks: 40%, Concrete: 10%). Below the soil/debris layer, GeoDesign noted large
dimensional lumber laying flat across the trench area. Below the dimensional lumber, GeoDesign noticed the contractor
exposed a gray sandy SILT interpreted as native material. For the second section of trench excavated today, GeoDesign
noted a large solid stump that the excavator couldn't remove and which was left in place. Once the native material was
exposed at the base of the trench and the base of the excavation had been cleaned out, GeoDesign notified BDZ that the
ground improvement trench could be backfilled.
The material excavated from the trench which was not saturated and free of organics was mixed with an imported brown
SAND with gravel and cement treated. The cement was added to the stockpile of excavated material using a punctured
super-sack which was swung from the arm of an excavator. The stockpile was then thoroughly mixed and allowed to
partially hydrate prior to backfilling the excavation.
The first foot of backfill material consisted of 2-4 inch quarry spells tamped into a firm and unyielding mass using the bucket
of an excavator. Beginning at approximately 14 feet below ground surface, the trench was backfilled using cement treated
soil which was placed in 12 to 18 inch loose lifts and compacted using an excavator-mounted hoepack.
The cement treated backfill material observed today will be checked to verify it has cured into a firm and unyielding mass
tomorrow.A summary of our observations can be found in the attached Figure 1 and Photo Log. Penetration depths into
cement treated backfill material placed last week was less than 1 inch.
The client and contractor were notified of our observations prior to our departure from the site today.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotecnnicai engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not include supervision or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents. Our firm is not responsible far site safety. This field report is a DRAFT representation of our field observations, testing, and preliminary recommendations. The report can only be considered
foal upon review of the GeoDesign project manager,as indicated by initials in the"Reviewed By"section
10700 Meridian Avenue North,Suite 402 i Seattle,WA 98133 I 206,838.9900
2502 Jefferson Avenue I Tacoma,WA 98402 I 253.203.0095
