GeoDesign noted that the vapor
barrier consisted of 10-mil thick black plastic and the capillary break material consisted of approximately 4-inches of 5/8
inch minus crushed rock. It is GeoDesign's understanding that the capillary break material will be compacted using a
standard sled compactor prior to the installation of reinforcing steel.
Building 6- Mat Foundation Observations(Foundation Subgrade):
Upon arrival, GeoDesign noted that the foundation excavation subcontractor had started excavation for the Building 6 mat
foundation area. With exception of the west perimeter, the mat foundation area generally consisted of a light brown/gray
silty SAND with gravel which could be probed less than 2 inches using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe.
Relative compaction of the mat foundation subgrade east of the west perimeter was tested using a Troxler Moisture-Density
gauge. In-place density tests indicated that the material had been compacted to greater than 95%of its maximum dry
density as determined by a Modified Proctor analysis. .
For the west perimeter of the mat foundation area, GeoDesign noted that the exposed mat foundation area could be probed
from 1 to 2.5 feet using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. GeoDesign notified Eddy Stevens with Polygon and Javier with the
foundation excavation subcontractor that the observed material is not suitable for support of the intended structure and
recommended that the area be over-excavated down to firm and unyielding material and replaced with structural fill.
A summary of our observations and density tests taken today can be found in the attached Figure 1 and Nuclear Density
Gauge Data.
The client and contractor were notified of our observations prior to our departure from the site.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not Include supervision or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents. Our firm is not responsible for site safety. This field report is a DRAFT representation of our field observations, testing, and preliminary recommendations. The report can only be considered
final upon review of the GeoDesign project manager,as indicated by initials in the"Reviewed By"section.
10700 Meridian Avenue North,Suite 402 I Seattle,WA 98133 I 206.838.9900
2502 Jefferson Avenue I Tacoma,WA 98402 I 253.203.0095
