fff&y HWA EO C1E ES NC.
TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM
TO: John Smith / David Evans & Associates
PREPARED BY: Steven E. Greene, L.E.G. / HWA GeoSciences Inc.
SUBJECT: SHALLOW SUBSURFACE CHARACTERIZATION
Everett Terminal & Cold Storage LLC
Everett, Washington
HWA PROJECT NO.: 2015-104-21
DATE: May 25, 2017
This memorandum presents the results of our limited field activities conducted to assess the
character and verifying the thickness of the rubbilized concrete layer placed over portions of the
site after building demolition by conducting a few test pits. In addition, we conducted
pothole/trenching in locations where we expect buried structures such as wood pilings, pile caps,
footing, tank saddles, and sheet piles within the proposed building foot print within the SW
portion of the Kimberly Clark- Everett Mill. This work was conducted in support of the design
by David Evans Associates (DEA) for re -development of the SW portion of the Kimberly Clark
— Everett Mill Site for use by Pacific Stevedoring LLC.
SITE LAYOUT
Initially, time was spent locating/flagging the four corners of the proposed building footprint
using a hand-held Trimble GeoXH GPS. Unit. We also located several areas of interest for
excavation, in addition to surface features such as CSO manholes and utility vaults as points of
reference. Areas excavated to determine lateral and vertical extent of buried structures or rubble
thickness are shown on Figure 1.
EXPLORATION
GPS locating and subsurface exploration were conducted on April 14th through April 16th,
2017. Excavations were conducted using a Deere 17-ZTS mini -excavator owned and operated by
John Pestell of Pestell Construction, Mukilteo, Washington. On 4/16 the mini -excavator broke
down, and was replaced by a Zaxiz 27-U excavator. Excavations were performed to a
maximum depth of 7 feet, as requested by the client. All excavations were logged
by a geologist from HWA.
