May 25, 2017
HWA Project No. 2015-104-21
unsuccessful in exposing any. It is likely since the pile supported structures were never
completely demolished, that locally piles still remain in place at depth. While the condition of
the piles was not ascertained at this locality. At the location of Test Pit #1 (about 70 feet to the
southwest) a wood pile was encountered at a depth of approximately 2.7 feet below the existing
ground surface. The pile appeared to be untreated.
Smokestack
On 4/16, Bryan Lust brought a structural drawing (Sheet E1360, dated 1929) that showed the
foundation for the chimney in the boiler house, to the south of the tank saddle foundations.
While on site, new coordinates were communicated from HWA's office, and input into the GPS.
A foundation area was staked out. Excavation began in the "center" of the staked area, and
extended south. Foundation slabs and the supporting piles were not observed, in our trench dug
to a depth of 7 feet. This was the last exploration completed.
Test Pits
One test pit was conducted in the southwest corner of the proposed building footprint area to find
buried piles (TP-1). Three test pits (TP-2 through TP-4) were conducted to assess the character
and thickness of the concrete rubble in selected areas where data in the form of an Isopach Map
appeared to be limited (Aspect Engineering, 2016, Draft Estimated Thickness of Recycled
Materials and Proposed Infrastructure). The surface and subsurface conditions observed while
conducting these explorations are shown in the test pit logs on Figures A-1 through A-5 in
Appendix A.
Attachments:
Figure 1 Site and Exploration Plan
Plates 1 — 7 Photographs of Site Features Observed During Exploration.
Appendix A HWA Exploration Logs
Figure A-1 Legend of Terms and Symbols Used on Exploration Logs
Figures A-2 — A-5 Soil Test Pit Logs
Technical Memorandum 4 HWA GeoSciences Inc.
