If conditions do not allow placing the soil at its present water <br />content, backfili should be the imported fill described above. <br />All backfili should be placed in uniform, horizontal layers not exceeding <br />eight inches loose thickness and compacted to at least 95 percent of the <br />maximum dry density as determined by the Modified proctor Compaction Test <br />(ASTM D-1557). <br />FOUNDATIONS <br />The glacial till soil underlying the substation site is suitable for founda- <br />tion support. Because the soil is very competent, all three types of <br />foundations used for support for substation structures (spread footings, <br />slabs, drilled piers) are considered suitable for the proposed structures at <br />this site. <br />After stripping off the top crushed rock surface, care must be taken to avoid <br />disturb-ing foUndatlon-subgrade soils:___If louse, wet or disturbed soils -are <br />encountered, or if the soils become disturbed at the foundation subgrade <br />elevation, the softened soils should be removed to expose undisturbed bearing. <br />3 <br />jConverse Consultants NW <br />
