r ` •
r •
410
Mr. Neil Montague
Northwest Handling Systems
Plan Check Number: B2103-014, First Building Review
March 16, 2019
Structural
1. The structural design has been performed per ASCE 7-10 Section 15.5.3, which references a
response modification factor of R=4. However, the design also considers a higher factor of R=6
for the moment frame direction. This is only permitted if documentation is submitted per
Section 15.5.3.5 substantiating the use of a higher value. Note that these type of racks are
typically not designed to perform better than ordinary moment frames, which are limited to a
factor of R=3.5. The details do not comply with the requirements for special moment frames
per AISC 341-10. The response factor should be reduced to R=4 for both directions. See IBC
Sections 1613.1 and 1901.2.
Response: This has been addressed. See attached updated calculations.
2. Continuing with the previous comment, the increased response modification factor will increase
the anchor design loads by 50% for one direction. The increased loads should be used in the
anchor design. See IBC Section 1604.1.
Response: This has been addressed. See attached updated calculations.
3. Calculations for the anchor design should be submitted for review. The design should comply
with ACI 318-14 Sections 17.2.3.4.3(d) and 17.2.3.5.3(c). The overstrength factor should be
52=3.0. See IBC Section 1604.1.
Response: This has been addressed. See attached Anchor Design document.
This review has been performed for general compliance with the building codes as adopted and
amended by the state of Washington and the city of Everett. Corrections and comments made
during the review process do not relieve the project from compliance with code and permit
requirements. The designers-of-record are responsible for a complete design in accordance with
the laws of the state of Washington.
If you have any questions or require additional clarification, please contact us.
Respectfully,
Drew Martin, P.E., S.E.
Associate Engineer/ Commercial Plans Examiner
(425)257-8813
dmartin@everettwa.gov
S:\BMa rtin\2021\B2103-014_R1.docx
O3200 Cedar Street © 425.257.8810 O everetteps@everettwa.gov
Everett,WA 98201 425.257.8857 fax everettwa.gov/sermits
Page 2 of 2
