•
•
Mr. Tim Verzal
Carports of Washington, Inc.
Plan Check Number: B1811-013, First Review
December 21, 2018
12.The lateral system is ordinary cantilever columns. The columns shall be designed for the
amplified seismic load per AISC 341-10 Section E5.4a. Calculations revising the design
loads and verifying the design shall be submitted for review. See IBC Section 2205.2.1.2.
13.The cantilever column systems is located along the centerlines of the structures in the
longitudinal direction. The 36-foot canopies per Sheet S3.0 will have a 50% loss of capacity
if a column fails. The 54-foot canopies per Sheet S4.0 may have a torsional irregularity if an
outer column fails. The structures shall be designed considering a redundancy factor of
p=1.3. See IBC Section 1613.1, and ASCE 7-10 Section 12.3.4.2 and Table 12.3-3.
14.The cantilever columns provide the lateral resistance for both orthogonal direction of the
building. The columns shall be design for orthogonal load effects per ASCE 7-10 Section
12.5.4. See IBC Section 1613.1.
15.The cantilever columns shall be designed for biaxial bending concurrent with axial loading
per AISC 360-10 Section H1. The columns and applied loads are different in the two
principal directions, and therefore each direction shall be evaluated. The axial load shall
include vertical seismic load effects per ASCE 7-10 Sections 12.4.2.2 and 12.4.3.2. The total
axial load shall not exceed 15% of the axial capacity per ASCE 7-10 Section 12.2.5.2 ans
AISC 341-10 Section E5.4a. See IBC Sections 1613.1 and 2205.2.1.2.
This review has been performed for general compliance with the building codes as adopted and
amended by the state of Washington and the city of Everett. Corrections and comments made
during the review process do not relieve the project from compliance with code and permit
requirements. The designers-of-record are responsible for a complete design in accordance
with the laws of the state of Washington.
If you have any questions or require additional clarification, please contact us.
Respectfully,
Drew Martin, P.E., S.E.
Associate Engineer/ Commercial Plans Examiner
(425)257-8813
dmartin@everettwa.gov
S:\BMartin\2018\B1811-013_R1.docx
0 3200 Cedar Street 425.257.8800 O everettpw@everettwa.gov
Everett,WA 98201 425.257.8882 fax I everettwa.gov
