•
•
Bruce S. MacVeigh, P.E.
Civil Engineer/Small Site Geotechnical
14245 59th Ave.S.
Tukwila, WA 98168
Cell Ph: 206-571-8794
September 4, 2019
Subject: Roof-Mounted Unit and Hood Evaluation, Pizza Hut, 10121 Evergreen
Way, Suite 23, Everett, WA 98204
General.
The existing building will receive new/upgraded roof-mounted restaurant related
units and new interior kitchen hoods. Also, one roof-mounted HVAC unit will be
replaced at same location and a new one installed with similar installation. It is
a one-story tenant unit in an existing building. The layout of the existing roof
has been verified by field measurement. Weights of units are per manufacturer.
Documentation is attached.
Comments/Evaluation Results.
1. The tenant space is 21' 8"wide and 60 feet long. A major glulam beam
crosses the space 20 feet to the rear of the front wall. Running front to back are
2" x 4" by 36" high wood roof trusses at 4 foot spacing. Note the glulam (7.5"
wide by 32" deep) is judged adequate without evaluation. All new units
evaluated will be in the front 40 feet of the space.
2. Per attached calculations the 36"high roof trusses in the front 40 feet of the
building have no additional moment capacity beyond existing basic roof loading.
The trusses are open lattice 2.0 Paralam LVL (Truss Chord rated)top and
bottom chord and cannot be reinforced. The solution is to block beneath the
trusses with additional loading with posts in the new building internal cross
walls. The solid post blocking wilt reduce the effective span for the trusses from
40 feet down to about 25 foot maximum span. With the added post blocking
under each affected truss, the two new Exhaust Fans#1 and#2 may be
installed without otherwise altering the roof structure.
3. The Makeup Air(MUA)fan for the main hood has a substantial weight (with
air tempering (heating)feature) of about 500#. Withal! affected roof trusses
having a shortened span with the support blocking, it may be installed without
otherwise altering the roof structure.
4. Important in the above unit evaluation is that they are each equally
supported by two roof trusses (or close to it), per usual construction practice.
Provided is a working sketch showing wood roof curbing recommended to
ensure two trusses support each unit.
\ 120
