EVERETT
OEM WASHINGTON
CONDITIONS REQUIRING FIELD CLOSURES
1. Insufficient lighting.
2. Dangerous field conditions with significant potential for player injury in the infield or outfield
(Loss of traction by players).
3. Rain squall with excessive water on field, creating significant potential for player injury.
4. Lightning storm within 5 miles of the facility. (No exceptions to this rule.)
5. Lack of ability to prepare fields from previous use or excess weather events (Holes, excessive
mud and water exist on the site).
6. Vandalism or damage to the fields creating significant potential for player injury.
PHIL JOHNSON CLOSURE PROCEDURES
Before releasing the fields for play, City maintenance staff will determine the playability of fields. If any
of the above listed hazards exist, the City will have the authority to delay or cancel play at any time.
After release of the fields by the City, the Association is responsible for determining the playability of
the fields using the criteria listed under CONDTIONS REQUIRING FIELD CLOSURES (numbered
above).
Process:
The Parks and Recreation Maintenance Staff will make an on-site determination of the playability of
the field(s) at 3:45pm daily. In the event of inclement weather, the following policy shall be in effect:
• Determination of whether or not games will be cancelled will be decided at 4pm by the Parks and
Community Services Department Athletic Coordinator or designee.
• At 4pm (Monday through Friday) and 8:00am (Saturday), a message will be recorded on the Kasch
Park Athletic Office Rain out line (425-257-8650 option #3) regarding game status.
Monday through Friday cancellations:
• If games are cancelled, all following games are cancelled for the remainder of the day regardless
of the improvement in the weather condition. The City will update the rainout line to reflect the
cancelation.
Weekend cancellations:
If the first game of the day is cancelled due to inclement weather or poor playing conditions, the
first two games will be rained out, regardless of the improvement in weather conditions. The
remainder of the scheduled games will be determined by the City. The City will coordinate with
the Association representative to determine whether or not the schedule will be delayed or
cancelled. In the event of a continued delay, play will only resume if the City has determined that
the fields can be released to the Association. The City will update the rainout line to reflect
whether the games will be delayed or cancelled.
• Field closure determination is based on an actual walking and visual inspection of the fields, as
well as the impending weather forecast for that remainder of the day.
• All access gates to the fields will be locked.
• Lightning events will cause the immediate suspension of all games and all persons will be
removed from the fields. Games may not resume until all lightning within 5 miles has ceased.
CONCLUSION
This program has focused on some important safety procedures and issues regarding the maintenance of
softball/baseball fields. Ball field maintenance is a responsibility that goes beyond making the field look good.
So remember, your efforts in the field will be appreciated by many people who will have a fun and safe
experience because of the job you are doing.
B7
