Aparients -- Building N Roof 'trusses Retrofit I met with Justin Church (General Contractor) at the Olin Fields Apartments Building Id site to observe the fire damaged roof trusses retrofit repair and other completed structural repair work. instead of installing new replacement trusses, Justin's crew was allowed to instead add 15/32" thick plywood sheathing to one side of each of the fire -damaged trusses. The plywood sheathing covered the entire height of the trusses for the full length and was attached with 1/4" diameter by . 1-1/2" long Simpson SDS screws spaced at 8" on center along the top and bottom chords and 12" on center along all diagonal/intermediate members. All plywood panel edges either fell on truss wood members or had 2x4 flat blocking added along unsupported panel edges between abutting truss members. All of this work looked acceptable and in conformance with the repair intent. At several locations the fire -damaged truss bottom chords were accidently cut out and replaced at one end. This condition is acceptable as installed provided horizontal Simpson CS16 straps x 4' long are added centered between the ends of the replacement bottom chord 2x4 members and the abutting original truss bottom chords (where they were cut). All strap nail holes shall be filled and the straps may be placed over the plywood sheathing. In addition, any damaged/removed truss steel press plate connectors shall be replaced with Simpson tie plates that Justin purchased. T P37 and TP45 tie plates shall be used to replace the original removed press plates with all nail holes filled with 8d x 1-1/2" long nails. At one slightly fire damaged scissor truss adjacent to the other repaired trusses, Justin was instructed to add plywood sheathing along one side as specified above that extends from the perimeter bearing wall to the central ridge line (1/2 of the truss span). For the shear walls, it is acceptable to use 7/1694 APA-rated OSB sheathing in lieu of the specified 15/32" sheathing, and it is acceptable to use .131" diameter x 3" long nails in lieu of the specified .148" diameter x 3-1/4" long nails.
