Cone Penetration Tests The CPT is a subsurface exploration technique in which a small-diameter steel tip with adjacent sleeve is continuously advanced with hydraulically operated equipment. Measurements of tip and sleeve resistance allow interpretation of the soil profile and the consistency of the strata penetrated. The tip resistance, friction ratio and pore water pressure are recorded on the CPT logs. The logs of the CPT probes are presented at the end of this appendix as Figures A-6 through A-25.
