Does side sewer have slope: not really (front yard is flat)
Depth of side sewer 10ft from house: 5' 5"
Depth at Backwater valve installation point: 5'3"
Any additional comments:
• 48 ft to 74 ft out in side sewer is holding water.
• House is served by a shared side sewer.
• Sink hole in yard indicates that side sewer is leaking and allowing material to
enter.
Problems Identified
1) This home does not currently have a backwater valve to prevent backups during high
flow surcharge events.
Solution:
Install backwater valve upstream of all downspout and exterior drain connections. See
attached site drainage and plumbing sketch for proposed location. Side sewer should
be repaired at the same time to allow appropriate grade on side sewer in order for
backwater valve to function optimally.
2) Sewer is flat and holding water from 48 ft to 74 ft. Also, there is a sink hole in this
area.
Solution: Replace side sewer via trenching and lay at correct grade.
3) (OPTIONAL IMPROVEMENT) Downspouts are connected to the side sewer. This
causes increased flow in the side sewer.
Solution A: Disconnect downspouts from side sewer, extend outfall 3' or more from
foundation, and provide splash block.
Solution B: Disconnect downspouts and install rain barrels to retain rain water runoff at
base of downspouts.
4) Basement has water coming in thru foundation wall.
Solution: Install footing drains around foundation and repair gutter drains where they are
leaking (or just route downspouts to splash blocks).
