2P)
PUBLIC WORKS
April 26, 2012
Eleanor Hurley
1407 Oakes Avenue
Everett, Washington 98201
Re: Plumbing Investigation at 1407 Oakes Avenue
Dear Eleanor,
The City of Everett's contractor, Seattle Drain Services, inspected your plumbing and
drainage on August 17, 2011, to determine if a backwater valve is appropriate for your
property. Their report, which is attached, recommends that the existing backwater valve
be reinstalled and the side sewer re-graded to ensure that it reduces the risk of basement
flooding from sewer surcharge. Because this backwater valve was installed via a City-
provided program, we are offering it to be reinstalled.
Your next step is to confirm that you want to participate in our backwater valve inspection
program. If you do, please call Grant Moen at 425-257-8947. We will then hire a
contractor to repair the side sewer and backwater valve. At the conclusion of the work,
the excavation will be refilled and hardened surfaces (driveways and/or sidewalks) will be
restored. You will also be provided training on the operation and maintenance of the
backwater valve. Restoration of grass and landscaping are your responsibility.
Please review the report to see where it identifies other deficiencies in your sewer and
drainage system that could lead to future problems. These private deficiencies are your
responsibility and we recommend that you take steps to correct these issues. We also
recommend that you regularly inspect your sewer and drainage systems to ensure they
are working properly.
Thank you for your interest in our backwater valve program. If you have any questions,
please contact Marla Carter (425-257-8875, mcarterrci.everett,wa.us) or Grant Moen
(425-257-8947, gmoenCici.everett.wa,us).
Sincerely,
Mark Sadler
Maintenance Superintendent
Everett Public Works
CITY OF EVERETT • 3200 Cedar Street • Everett, WA 98201 • (425) 257-8800 • Fax (425) 257-8882
