N.L.Olson&Associates,Inc. <br /> Engineering, Planning and Land Surveying. <br /> October 17,2017 <br /> New Hewitt/Hodges Associates, LLC <br /> c/o <br /> Doug Engelson <br /> 2418-C California Street <br /> Everett, WA 98201 <br /> RE: Fire Escape Evaluation at 1804 Hewitt Ave, Everett <br /> Mr. Engleson, <br /> NL Olson and Associates was retained to prepare a structural evaluation of the fire escape on the <br /> building at 1804 Hewitt Avenue in Everett. I made a site visit to the building to inspect the <br /> escape and the analysis/recommendations herein are based on a detailed visual inspection and <br /> subsequent structural analysis, The analysis is limited to structural analysis only to the extent of <br /> the inspection methodology. <br /> The building is a 5 story structure and the fire escape in question is located on the south end of <br /> the east wall. The exit doorways are on the east wall. Only(4) floors are accessible via this <br /> escape. The lowest floor(main)can exit to the sidewalk. <br /> As you approach the escape'dram the south,the lowest level(2"d floor)of the escape is <br /> constructed of 2x 12 wood joists and 6x8 beams and posts. The stair to the 3`d floor is a steel stair <br /> that leads to an 8 foot long steel landing constructed of steel bar grating and steel angles. The <br /> steel angles are attached to the brick facade with(2)anchor bolts on(2) sides and supported by a <br /> 2"wide steel bar knee brace. The knee brace is attached to the exterior wall with what appears to <br /> be a cast-in-place angle. <br /> Between each level of landings, there is a steel stair constructed of steel grate treads and steel <br /> channel stringers. The stair stringers are"hooked" over the bar grating at the top and bolted to <br /> the bar grating at the base. <br /> My analysis of the steel landings indicates that the bar grating. angles and knee braces are <br /> adequate to support a 100 psf live load. The only piece I am unsure of is the connection of the <br /> knee braces to the brick. Specifically, at the top of the knee braces. The red clay brick is not very <br /> strong in tension. The top of the knee braces have a tension component at the attachment. I <br /> believe that the exterior wall is concrete with a brick facade. I also believe that the anchors for <br /> the escape platforms go into the concrete wall and not just the brick.,If the anchors go into the <br /> concrete, they would only require a"J"bolt with 3 'Y2" embedment. <br /> 2453 BETHEL AVENUE, P.O.
