The response comments are in red for clarity.
1. The project involves structural modifications to the existing roof. A separate building permit
application is required including revised structural drawings and calculations. Additional
comments may be pending. The following preliminary comments should be addressed:
a. Opening locations on Sheet S1 do not appear consistent with the mechanical plans, notably
for the MUA duct. The locations should be revised as needed. See IBC Section 107.2.1.
Structural and mechanical plans have been coordinated and the duct openings (specifically for
the MUA duct) is now consistent between the mechanical plans and structural plans.
b. The structural calculations evaluating the roof trusses do not appear to be included and should
be submitted for review. See IBC Sections 1604.1 and 1604.4.
Bradley Engineering,Inc. has decided to revise the structural plan to support the (2) new
hoods as well as roof mounted exhaust fan and MUA fan entirely independent of the existing
roof system. Thus, an analysis doesn't need to be performed on the existing roof trusses.
c. The design loads considered in the structural calculations are not clear. The load schedule in
the calculations appear to include deck and floor loads, which is not applicable, and no snow
loading. The applicable loads should be dead (i.e., self-weight and mechanical equipment,
including the hoods below) and snow loading. Revised calculations should be submitted for
review. See IMC Sections 1603.1 and 1605.
Please see the attached revised calculations for clarity. However, the structural design has
been amended, thus the calculations are different.
All the applicable loads on the structural members are dead loads solely from the new HVAC
equipment or point loads being transferred from a beam supporting new HVAC equipment to
the beam carrying the respective beam and spanning bearing wall to bearing wall. New
structural members are entirely independent of the existing structural roof system, thus typical
roof loads were not considered.
2. Sheet M-1 states that the Type I hood is constructed to allow a zero-clearance installation. The
equipment sections on CaptiveAire Sheet 2 show insulation on the top and back, but the plan view
does not indicate insulation is provided on the sides. Sheet 2 should be revised to show insulation
on the sides, or the 18-inch clearance must be provided. See IMC Section 507.2.6.
Per NFPA 96, hood surfaces perpendicular to combustible wall or structures do not need to be
insulated to maintain the zero-inch clearance rating. Only the surface of the hood against a
1 J3
