1
September 30, 2013
City of Everett I
To Whom It May Concern:
I am requesting monetary compensation for damages incurred during recent
flooding of Broadway Avenue. My property is located at 3614 Broadway, Everett,
WA 98201. I have two rentals on this property. Unit A faces Broadway at street
level. On Saturday,August 31, 2013, Broadway Avenue was flooded. Water filled
the street, flooding the sidewalks. Water pushed into our building, flooding the
floor and carpets.
I am requesting $853.95 as the total claim. Costs included: $213.95 for the rental
of a dehumidifier and carpet cleaning (see attached receipts). I am also
requesting compensation for the cost of labor to do the cleaning and the cost my
tenant incurred for loss of business. My tenant was inconvenienced-and ran his
Allstate Insurance business at Starbucks Coffee until the building dried out. Mr.
Keith Partington is my tenant. He manually cleared a storm drain twice during the
period from August aft-September 2, 2013. Costs for his labor and displacement
are estimated to be $640.00. This includes 32 hours of labor and business loss.
Approximately 20 years ago I built up the flooring in the building after a similar
storm. Gutters and storm drains were not maintained by the city at that time. I
incurred a loss and I did not file any claims. I recently contacted the Department
of Public Works. I was told that there is no regular maintenance schedule for
storm drains. I was also told they are not cleaned unless someone reports an
issue with a slow or clogged drain.
Have all drainage structures been vacuumed and cleaned? Are manholes, catch
basins and cross culverts included in routine cleaning?
I am very concerned about future storms and how the city plans to deal with
drainage structures. Please contact me to discuss this compensation and a plan
to prevent other flooding problems.
Sincerely, f
