In the
introduction it is stated,"The purpose of this test is to measure the ability of a representative duct or duct
assembly that is part of an air-distribution system to resist the spread of fire from one fire compartment to
another, with fire attack from inside or outside the duct. It is applicable to vertical-and horizontal ducts,
with or without branches, taking into account joints and exhaust openings, as well as suspension devices
and penetration points."
It is clear from the descriptions that ASTM E 119 is a general fire test standard which may be applied to a
number of materials and building products. In order to apply ASTM E 119 to an air duct the test standard.
must be modified. To do this a duct must be mounted in a furnace which will heat the duct up at the rate
prescribed in the test standard, simulating a fire occurring outside of the duct in order to demonstrate the
ability of the duct enclosure system to remain intact on the duct and protect it from the effects of a fire.
Other determinations may be made during the fire test, such as the ability of the duct support system to
withstand a fire, and a through-penetration firestop system may be evaluated.None of this is described in
ASTM E 119.
ISO 6944 is a fire test standard specifically designed for ventilation duct construction used,in building to
evaluate the spread of fire from one part of a building to another, to evaluate the duct enclosure and
support systems during a fire, and to evaluate a through-penetration firestop system. Since ISO 6944 is
specifically designed for air ducts the test standard requires no modification.
www.morganthermalceramics.corn
Morgan Thermal Ceramics,Thenne!Ceramics Inc Augusta,Georgia
