RESOLUTION NO. 7839 <br />A RESOLUTION of the City of Everett recognizing Native American Heritage Month 2022 <br />WHEREAS, <br />A.Each year, November 1, through November 30, the United States celebrates National Native <br />American Heritage Month. <br />B.Native American Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Native <br />Americans throughout the history of the United States and to our local community. <br />C.It is also an opportunity to celebrate the vibrant cultures, traditions, stories, and triumphs. And <br />to recognize the tragedies that need to be shared with future generations that impact us today. <br />D.Native Americans speak and preserve indigenous languages, culture and religion that in the past <br />have been forbidden and forcefully replaced with English, American culture and religion, using <br />local boarding schools and other methods throughout the country. <br />E.The City of Everett lies on the historic land of the sduhubš people and their successors, the <br />Tulalip Tribes. <br />F.Today, our city works toward showing respect to indigenous people and correcting stories and <br />practices that erase or misrepresent their histories and cultures by having and using an official <br />land acknowledgement, actively participating in partnerships and by sharing resources and <br />educating the community, correcting false information. <br />G.The City of Everett acknowledges the community and economic strength of the local tribes and <br />deeply appreciates their contributions to the community, the state, the region, and the nation. <br />H.The resilience of our tribal partners continues as advocates who lead the way in sustaining, <br />protecting, and restoring ecosystems, natural resources and traditional stories and teachings; <br />and bringing cultural awareness and good health to future generations. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: <br />1.The City of Everett encourages all residents to seek opportunities to learn more about the <br />histories and heritages of the Tulalip Tribes and other tribes across the United States. <br />_________________________________________ <br />Councilmember introducing resolution <br />Judy Tuohy
