LABORATORY INVESTIGATION
' Representative soil samples obtained from the boreholes were returned to HWA's laboratory for
further examination and testing. Laboratory tests were conducted on selected soil samples to
characterize relevant engineering properties of the on-site soils. The laboratory testing program
' was performed in general accordance with appropriate ASTM Standards as outlined below. A
Summary of Material Properties table is included as Figure B-1.
MOISTURE CONTENT OF SOIL:Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the natural
moisture content of selected soil
in,sam les general accordance with ASTM D-2216. Test
P
results are indicated at the sampled intervals on the appropriate exploration logs in Appendix A.
ORGANIC CONTENT OF SOIL: Selected samples were tested in general accordance with method
ASTM D 2974, using moisture content method 'A' (oven dried at 105°C) and ash content
method `C' (burned at 440°C). The test results are summarized below. The results are reported
as percent by weight of dry soil.
IMoisture Content and Organic Matter
Moisture Organic
I
Sample Content(%) Content(%)
B-101, S-1 at 5'-6.5' 13 14.2
B-102, S-2 at 8.5'-10.5' 149 16.4
B-104, S-2 at 12.5 -14.5 47 2.4
B-106, S-1 at 5'-6.5' 36 21.4
1 LIQUID LIMIT,PLASTIC LIMIT,AND PLASTICITY INDEX OF SOILS(ATTERBERG LIMITS).
Selected samples were tested using method ASTM D 4318, multi-point method. The results are
reported on the attached Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, and Plasticity Index reports, Figure B-2.
PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSIS OF SOILS: Selected samples were tested to determine the particle size
distribution of material in general accordance with ASTM D422. The results are summarized on
i the attached Grain Size Distribution reports, Figures B-3 through B-10, and provide information
regarding the classification of the sample.
ONE DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION PROPERTIES OF SOIL: The consolidation properties of
selected soil samples from borehole B-102 were measured in general accordance with
ASTM D 2435. Saturation was maintained by inundation of the sample throughout the test. The
samples were subjected to increasing increments of total stress, the duration of which was
selected to exceed the time required for completion of primary consolidation as defined in the
Standard, Method B. Unloading of the sample was carried out incrementally. The test results
are presented on the attached One Dimensional Consolidation Properties of Soil reports,
Figure B-11.
