NIEHS Oil Spill Cleanup Training Tool <br />OSHA <br />Carbon Dioxide (CO') <br />• Carbon dioxide is colorless. At low concentrations, the gas is odorless. At <br />higher concentrations it has a sharp, acidic odor. <br />• CO, is an asphyxiant and an irritant. When inhaled it can produce a sour <br />taste in the mouth and a stinging sensation in the nose and throat. <br />• The NIOSH recommended exposure limit is 30,000 ppm in a 15 minute <br />period, with a time weighted average of 5,000 ppm — the same as the OSHA <br />PEL.
