Do not click links or open <br />attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. <br />Dear Everett City Council: <br />I'm writing to express my strong support for the proposed ordinances to prohibit public <br />consumption of controlled substances (CB-2304-29) and to establish service facility buffer zones for <br />social service providers, shelter and temporary housing providers, and other high impact areas (CB <br />2304-30). <br />Public consumption of drugs such as fentanyl, heroin, and meth has created significant public safety <br />challenges. Many of those suffering from addiction also remain trapped in unsheltered, hazardous <br />conditions on our streets. In addition to providing access to services and treatment for those in <br />need, our community must have legal tools that can compel people who are completely lost to their <br />addiction to take much needed steps in their recovery. <br />Public consumption of drugs also creates safety hazards for residents, employees, business owners, <br />and service providers who are exposed to drug activity and people under the influence of drugs. The <br />dramatic increase in nuisance behaviors, shoplifting, theft, vandalism, assaults, and other forms of <br />violence has a direct connection to the prevalence of addiction and the absence of legal tools for <br />intervention. <br />On the subject of providing assistance, we must ensure that our community can mitigate potential <br />adverse impacts around locations providing social services and temporary housing. Establishing <br />buffer zones is critical for maintaining support from community members living and working near <br />these locations as well as for establishing a safe environment for those receiving assistance. <br />In closing, I urge you to vote in favor of Council Bill 2304-29 and Council Bill 2304-30. <br />Sincerely, <br />
