The new retaining wall should be supported on competent,
native, transitional bed deposits. Depending on the final grades, some over excavation may be
required in order to remove, loose, near-surface soils and reveal competent native soils. Over
excavations may be restored to final grade with compacted structural fill. Further
recommendations regarding the placement and compaction of structural fill can be found in the
Fill and Compaction section of this report.
Fill and Compaction
Structural fill used to obtain final elevations for footings must be properly placed and compacted.
In most cases, suitable, non-organic, predominantly granular soil may be used for fill material
13
