Geminus Boeing Project Contract No.EVE-16-2929
1 Technology Development CEI Project No. 160731
• All of the overspray volatiles can be modeled as heptan-2-one, which makes up
—40% of the paint mass. Heptan-2-one has an LEL of 1.11%, which is
characteristic of the other volatile ingredients.
• Atomizing air flows out of the spray gun at —17 scfm. Reference [20] shows that
a typical air consumption value for the spray gun is 20 scfm. Discussions with the
manufacturer indicate that —3 scfm of that is used to power the spray gun turbine
and balance goes to atomizing the paint [22]
2.3.5.2 Case 2 and Case 3 Paint Scenario & Configuration
For Cases 2 and 3, the CFD paint model assumed primer paint. The paint parameters that
were used is the Run 3 spray conditions identified in Figure 2. Boeing decided it was sufficient
to simulate Case 2 and 3 scenarios using the Run 3 spray gun condition, instead of the baseline
clear coat condition.
19
