The following
clarifications are in response to the structural items in the review:
1. The lateral system is a combination of special reinforced concrete shear walls and special steel
concentrically braced frames. This has been clarified in the general notes on sheet S-1.0.
2. The load cases used in design of the system are for normal loading of the braced bay. Case one is
when the loading is balanced between tension and compression. Case two is how we internally
determine if the loading delivered to the system will cause the brace to buckle. Case three is how
we determine the maximum compression load applied to the column using overstrength, which we
also design the connections for. Calculations on sheets L-22a and L-23a verify the maximum level
of load transferable to the system by overturning analysis.
3. Braced frame beam has been revised to a size that meets highly ductile member requirements.
4. Sheet L-26 has been revised as redundancy is not necessary in design of collector element
connections.
5. Protected zones have been added to the elevation on sheet S-3.1.
6. This loading is to represent maximum force that can be delivered to the system. On revised
calculation package sheet L-32 we have performed an overturning analysis of the braced frame
footing, resulting in the maximum load which can be accepted by the system. This load is compared
to Cases II and III for the applied load, and the higher values are used for design.
7. Panel overturning has been checked on calculation sheets L-43 through L-46 of the revised
structural calculation package. The required connection to stitch appropriate panels together are
now shown on the panel elevations.
8. This requirement is specifically for pre-cast concrete construction, which in our opinion, site cast
concrete tilt-up panels are not. I have included an article from Structure Magazine which discusses
this topic for design.
Please contact our office should you have any further questions or if you require additional information.
Sincerely,
Dmitri Vorobiev, P.E.
